I found an article about the increase in web viewed news. LINK
I sent the above link to the editor and managing editor just to show them that the publisher might need to change some focus and break in a new world. They have all been in the newspaper biz for quite sometime and have never had to adapt to a major change. I believe they are attempting to stay with what works and not worry about anything else, like providing information to the local population or caring about the appearance of the product that they are producing.
I have said it before but here it is again. Their isn't much of a competetion but they should still consider the appearance and quality of the product. The community they serve only has one source for information about their community. Their should be a little more effort put into serving them. If you have a great product the profits will follow.
The paper needs to adapt to the new advertising model or they will be swallowed up and lose their ability to provide information to their local community. They need to be on top of ways to delivery the news as they are on top of the news. But in the case of my paper they are rather fitting, they are lacking in both departments.
A great blog post on Why print media is doomed.
Frontline on PBS did a nice piece on the news and print media. It dealt with what newspapers and print media need to do in the age of information where news is received on the go via wi-fi and SMS on cell phones. People no longer wake and pick up the early edition and sit down with a cup of coffee, they are rolling out of bed picking up their laptop and begin reading RSS feeds from multiple sources that come in every minute or so throughout the day. NEWS WARS
This will lead me into tomorrow's post and a few more tid-bits on the inevitable failure of print media.
That should be enough to pack your spare time until the next installment.
