The New Yorker did some dirty work for me.

I spoke of wanting a studio to work with editorial/magazines and adventure and lifestyle images. This is due to the demise of traditional journalism.
So here you go for your reading pleasure:
The News Business: Out of Print

"
Philip Meyer, in his book “The Vanishing Newspaper” (2004), predicts that the final copy of the final newspaper will appear on somebody’s doorstep one day in 2043."
I predict sooner than that.

"Taking its place, of course, is the Internet, which is about to pass newspapers as a source of political news for American readers. For young people, and for the most politically engaged, it has already done so. As early as May, 2004, newspapers had become the least preferred source for news among younger people."

I would be so lucky to land a decent spot with a paper that I would be able to feel secure about. With so many photojournalist out of work I have a lot of competetion. I have entered the arena and waiting it out.

A bit of excitement.
International pillow fight day.

Things like the pillow fight bring about the following feelings. Oh, how I wish to live in a real city. One where I can get a bite to eat that isn't out of a bucket or wirh a side of fries and a gallon of cola.
One where people are active, not engorging themselves with the prime time line-up.
One where police officers are no longer referred to as "da law." Used in a sentence "Im gonna call da law on you."
One where I can leave a spare change in your vehicle and not fear the window being busted.

Well I will admit these problems exist in some form everywhere. However, most places the occurrence is far less than that of my current situation.

Editorial
My less than spectacular images from work. I have a specific purpose for the addition. We shall see how that goes for me. More on this at a later time. Well, only if that later time bring the positive.

And something I could only dream of. A Photo Happening
I could really use something fun and creative, such as the "happening" it would be a nice escape for me.

Mangum in Motion : WARS

Also, after browsing slideshows of Barack Obama's visit to Fayetteville, NC today I stumbled across something that I, as a photographer, found strange.
Being so caught up in Obama people failed to notice Annie Leibovitz in the building. I assume she is working a project for TIME magazine.

Seeing this almost made me wish I had driven up to cover the event that was invite and press only. I would have enjoyed meeting Annie.

Are job cuts signaling the end for America's newspapers?

With that link, I am calling out to everyone who may stumble upon this and is willing to offer some aid in my escape from the void. Whether by a contact of a friend or forwarding info to me about a possibility to me. I want to start another chapter in this life and am ready now, more than ever, to transition to a studio setting and work with commercial clients doing adventure/lifestyle, editorial and product photography.

In addition an except from my website...
"
Brian is looking for serious and passionate photographers who are interested in founding co-op/collaborative photographic studio. Brian is willing to re-locate in hopes to be a founding member of a studio that will produce top notch commercial and fine art works. In addition the studio would afford the opportunity to be a gallery space and center for photographic education. Brian hopes that the studio would be able to offer workshops to the public to expand their knowledge and creativity in the world of photography."

Some links...
First an attempt to make light of a bad situation ... I disagree with many items in this article. But it is interesting.

Web has unexpected effect on journalism

I give you this next link in hopes that you will take a fragment of time for the day to view it in it's entirety.

Bearing Witness: Five years in Iraq

As much as I have already been dragged down by the small town photojournalism. So much that I have begun to strongly consider a different path for my work. Seeing the presentation in the above link reignites the flame in me. With that flame comes an air of anxiety, eagerness and longing.

Many may think I am crazy for wanting to be the one who captures such images and is in the middle of the war-torn and chaotic worlds. I see it as an honorable task to take on. A receipt for proof of existence in that time and place.

I wanna be one to change a person's "out of sight, out of mind" demeanor about events in the world.

I want to pull people away from their couches as they are drooling over the next "idol" and feed them some reality. This is the most documented era and most documented "war". However the people are less informed about what is actually going on. This is thanks to the wonderful "unbiased and fair and balanced" news outlets they are presented with.
The link provides you will things you don't see on the evening news or the morning edition (I could go on a rant about why they are not there) These are the things that should fill those outlets rather than some teenie-bopper popping out another bastard child or which washed up Hollywood has- been got a DUI last night.
I understand people finding solace in the fantasy world of TV land, the land of ignorance and bliss, the land of naiveté. But some day reality is going to come at them. Not in the form of Donald Trump's feeble attempt to rake in another million but in the form of civil unrest, injustice, violence and destruction. That is reality. Imagine a world where people spent as much money feeding those without a meal each night as they do voting for their corporate conglomerate created idol they love to worship.

In interest of stealing too much time and rambling on incoherently. I will not verbalize the torrent of thoughts that have flooded in from typing the above.

Finite

Pic of the day 69/365
I grew a bit scared for the future today while observing children attempt to layout a 3x10 grid with sidewalk chalk on a parking lot. These were middle schoolers and they were having trouble grasping the concept of simple measurements with a pre-measured length of string and a diagram of what was to be their finished product. Their assignment was to draw a species of whale, life-size within the grid they created. In my time there only one of the five groups completed the task. Though it wasn't without error, their whale was only half scale. Here is where I could comment on the state of public education and the dead end road many children have been set upon by their upbringing but, I will refrain, because this says it all

I have gained much of my knowledge through self-exploration fueled by an inquisitive nature. There is something in me that drives me to share what I know and see. Without going to deep into these matters I will cut to the chase. One major reason my motivation to create photographs is to share things with others, to inform them, to give reference, to motivate.

Maybe you have noticed in my daily snapshots that I am a fan of the infinite or that which seems to be and repetition of elements.

With that thought you may see why I found enjoyment in this slideshow.

Mistakes and lawsuits...

National Geographic photographer Annie Griffiths Belt describes the makings of some of her images.
A Camera, Two kids and a Camel

Today in the newsroom, I am having trouble bringing words to it.

Basically long story short, a murder story ran this week and man was arrested and charged for it. The paper thought they ran a mug shot of said man. Well, that mug shot was not the man who was arrested and charged for the said murder.

Big Big Big mistake.
Why did this happen?
Laziness.
This is also the result of someone who isn't passionate about their career. They do their job just for a paycheck. You can't have this in a newsroom. You have to care! You have to spend that extra 1-3 seconds checking "date modified" or file names to assure you are doing your job correctly. When you aren't multi-tasking and do the same thing day-in and day-out this should become second nature.

Maybe I expect too much out of others. So many things come naturally to me, like computers, cameras, and photography. I forget that others don't have the same grasp on some things like I do. Then again I haven't made a career out of laying out the page of a newspaper everyday, so my knowledge on that is limited. Just seems like a mistake that is difficult to make.

Maybe I'm wrong. But I would bet that I am not.

Pound cake, rain and "SPORTS!"

Pic of the day 63/365
Rainy day.

Here is a look back at February.

Inappropriate behaviors amongst co-workers or maybe just those little annoyances that you love to hate. Let's face it they make your day go by faster even though they send chills up your spine and get the vein in your forehead throbbing. Everyone has them in their day-to-day but when you are in an office they tend to get amplified.
Sometimes it is the inappropriate web-sites some visit.
Could be that noise someone makes as the exit the building ten times a day
Or even how someone speaks to you that makes you well up with some words that might get you canned.

I spent the day in the office, slow news day.
Newsrooms are meant to be non-partisan, unbiased and spread the truth. If only this was a reality instead of the neo-McCarthist and Orwellian impending future we face, and not just in the newsroom.
As I have said before news corporations are owned and operated by partisan hacks that spread their idea of the "truth."
Newsrooms are packed with racism, prejudice, tension and arrogance. Some get away with calling themselves "fair and balanced" just because their audience is gullible enough to swallow their soylent green for the day.
At times words are taken out of a writers well crafted story with polysyllabic words and great reference to a piece of literature and gets replaced with something that sounds as if a grammar schooler slapped it together.
Why is this done? It dumbs down the copy... I guess when quality isn't a concern it is ok to "dumb it down."
What is so wrong with making a reader run to a dictionary or search the web for the meaning of that reference you made. If you can inform and educate a reader that much more with your story I say go for it.
Let's pick up where are public schools are failing and not allow prejudice, apathy, ignorance and disrespect. Also, lets bring that freedom back to the press.

Notice that the angry journalist pales in comparison for the amount of responses...

I got a teaser today... as you can see in the pic of the day. It has to go back in less than two weeks.
I have a few more images below that are to hold me over till my wallet can suffer the lesion brought on by owning one of these bad boys.
My drooling over this is just some insight into my world of being forced to provide my own equipment due to my publisher not doing such.
Most outlets would provide their photojournalist with two of these and a plethora of lenses to with it.
Some day...
